'Olden Days' ....1960's and early 70's, when trucks were trucks and fair
maidens wouldn't be caught dead in them, just country girls with shzt on
their boots.

They were called 'Warn Hubs' (a brand name) and you twisted a dial in the
center of each wheel which dis-engaged the drive axle, the transfer case
disengaged the other end (drive shaft) just like today ....this backing up
stuff didn't start until the late 70's.
