Gear ratio change - computer programming

I recently swapped the gears from 3.55 to 3.92 ratio in my '97 Dakota CC
4x4. I have been getting conflicting information from the dealer
whether the computer needs to be reprogrammed for the new ratio. A
Dodge tech posted to the list awhile back about this subject with some
really cool detailed stuff describing how the '97 speedometer can be
corrected with the new speedo gear, but the '98 and newer required a
computer reprogram to calibrate for tires or gear changes.

I have already corrected the speedometer calibration by changing the
stock 31 tooth speedo pinion in the transfer case to a 35 tooth, but I
am wondering if the shift pattern for the auto trans, ABS, etc. gets any
info from the computer regarding axle ratio. One guy in the service
dept. told me it needed to be done, but then the tech who actually
attempted to do the work claimed there was no way to select an axle
ratio when programming the computer, at least for the '97 model. Can
anyone on the list confirm what the real story is? Any detailed info
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Dale
