My VW has 9 inches of ground clearance and my friends has 12. I have
never taken mine over anything to rough yet but my friend has. We go
down anything from 4X4 trails to sand dunes and everything in between.
One of the places that we like to go sand running you have to follow
some tough 4X4 trails to get to it. Rob is exactly right about the
underbelly of a bug, its all flat. That means no differentials to get
hung up on or no exhaust to rip off. The only thing that I am asking is
to give credit where credit is due. VW's are pratical and tough. They
might not be the best looking cars around but they are not ugly and they
are not weak.

Gotta disagree with you Norah. I have a '60s VW beetle and I used to go
everywhere with it. It had 6" of ground clearance and it was flat
underneath, kinda like a giant skid pan. It took a dent or two. A 4x4
dak
has 7" of ground clearance with skid pans over the front differential
and
the fuel tank. Whenever the mud or snow lifted the beetle's real wheels
off the ground (so they spun), we'd get out and push or lift. Never had
to
be towed out.
I had studded snow tires (and chains ... never used them) and in the
snow
(especially if icey), actually was able to go further than many of the
4x4's of that era.
