I'm referring to the idle quality of the cam. When cam figures push the rpm
range up higher with longer duration figures, you run into more valve
"overlap", which is when the exhaust and intake valves are open at the same
time. If you run a large cam (say over 210 deg dur @ 0.50" on anything under a
114 deg lobe sep. angle on a small V8 such as a 318) low rpm engine speeds
start to become choppy, especially at idle.. the idle won't be smooth, it will
have a irratic 'lope' to it. Some people don't mind it, but usually it's a
headache in a daily driven application...

<< Knowing the HP/torque curves for the Magnum engines, is it best to have a
cam that will give you more low-end grunt or one that will help out at the
upper-RPM range? >>

The Magnum engines aren't made for super screaming RPMs... the evidence is in
their port design, intake manifold, etc.... If you plan on keeping your mods
limited & staying naturally aspirated, then the MP cam (or something similar)
is probably just what you're looking for.
