Gene,
As an engine is warming up, the computer is actually operating in "open
loop" mode (relying on values retrieved from the maps within the computer).
Once operating
temperature is reached, the computer will operate in "closed loop" mode
during idle and cruise. In "closed loop" the computer relies on the O2
sensor for fine tuning
the fuel/air ratio. If operating temperatures are not reached, then the
computer will not go into "closed loop". In the OBD-II vehicles, there are
actually two variables
the computer looks at, the coolant temperature, and the amount of time it
takes for the engine to reach operating temperature. If either of these do
not meet the
preprogrammed values, then a check engine light. My thoughts.....
