Brian, if your transmission is shifting fine now I wouldn't worry too much.
The metal shavings in your filter are, I've been told, normal for the first
trans. fluid & filter change and are the result of normal break in. I just
changed the fluid and filter in my 95 and my trans filter was full of shavings
too. Just be sure and change the fluid and filter once a year. An automatic
transmission guru here once told me that automatic transmission fluid should
never have to endure more than one summer. He also recomended installing a
transmission cooler.
