I jumped in on this thread late, but....
Air cooled VWs are a blast to drag race & watch.. I have alittle experience in
that area, had a 2332cc Type 1 air cooled engine that I sold before it was
completed.. I believe it's in a sand rail making in the area of 375 horsepower
w/ a streetable turbo kit.
The 911 is a completely different beast on the other hand.. Dry sump oiling
system, overhead cams, hemisphearical combustion chambers, one head per
cylinder, etc.. the list could go on forever, but the most important factor
here is price... you can't beat the economical price of VW parts which is why
they're still popular today, even in drag racing ..
