I have the same truck only a 98 and no clunking. Sometimes I feel a thud
after the truck is stopped. The funny thing about my truck is some noises
come and go (especially after wheeling). What kind of clunk is it and when
does it happen? If you slip the clutch will it still clunk? The clutch is a
grabber from hell. When you drop it, it grabs right now with NO slip. At
that time you might get a clunk but that is expected. after the first 500
miles, try speed shifting and yowl know what I mean.

Subject: DML: New Dak Shifting Clunk
I picked up my new 99 Dakota Sport, V8, 5spd. 4X4 a
couple days ago. Everything went well. All options I had
ordered were in it. No visual defects or scratches. Tried
out all the accessories everything worked. Went on the test
drive and ran fine except for one thing. Shifting from 1st to
2nd and 2nd to 3rd I heard sort of a clunk. I didnt think that
much of it at the time since I was used to driving a car that
had a very low clutch (the Dak seems to be quite high) with
different shift points so I thought it was just me needing to get
used to a new manual transmission. After driving a couple hundred miles
I dont think its me anymore. Is this clunking normal? 3rd to 4th and 4th
to 5th theres no clunk. Thanks.
