I have to disagree here. Unless your engine contains a knock sensor that
will adjust the timing based on octane, you are WASTING money by using more
octane than you need. High octane isn't any cleaner than low octane, it is
only harder to ignite. With higher octane, you will have harder starting
(more wear on starter, etc.). If your truck runs fine on 87, you are just
throwing your money away using anything higher.
I've used 87 octane in my '92 Dak 318 since new. It now has 138k on it, and
the injectors have never been touched. I run a can of injector cleaner thru
the tank maybe once every 20k, but I never felt like I 'needed' it. Truck
still averages 18mpg city/hwy. I tried higher octane once or twice, seemed
like my mileage went down.
