Brake problems. I need advise please.

I took a look at the front brakes on my Dakota to try and help another Dak
owner with some questions he had. While I was under there I noticed that:

1) There is no splash shield on the backside of the rotor. Does anyone know
if 98+ Dakota 4X4's are supposed to have one. I understand that the 97's
have a partial shield.
2) My drivers side rotor is cracked on the back side. The crack does not
appear to extend through the vented slot, so the outside is still intact.

The truck has 19500 miles on it and is 17 months old. This puts it 5 months
outside of warranty repair on the brakes. I'm hoping that either the cracks
are a material defect in the rotor, or the absence of the shield allowed
something to get up on the it to cause the crack and the dealership will
still charge DC for the parts.

What I would like to ask is that anyone with a 98+ Dakota 4X4, or know
someone with one, please look under the front of the truck and let me know
what you find. I'm going to the dealership tomorrow for some other stuff, so
if you could reply back quickly it would be appreciated. I know this is
short notice, but I just saw it myself.

For those that are "In the know" on brakes. What would it take to crack a
rotor? Is this something that I should be able to get DC to pick up the tab
on? Is this so rare that I should file a complaint with NHTSA?

Thank you all,
John
