DaimlerChrysler March Sales Up 16 Pct

DETROIT (Reuters) - DaimlerChrysler AG (NYSE:DAJ - news) Thursday said its March
U.S. sales jumped 16 percent to 250,010 vehicles on a record
number of pickup truck, sport utility and minivan sales, beating analysts'
expectations.

Sales of light trucks from the world's fifth-largest automaker rose 20 percent to
180,270. Car sales were up 9 percent to 69,740. Figures do not
include sales from the company's Mercedes-Benz unit.

German-American DaimlerChrysler said monthly records were set by its Dodge
division, which had sales of 139,888 vehicles, an increase of 11
percent. Jeep vehicle sales hit a new March record of 45,098, up 18 percent.

Also Thursday, Japanese automakers Toyota Motor Corp. (Nasdaq:TOYOY - news) and
Honda Motor Co. Ltd. posted higher U.S. sales for March,
capping a strong first quarter.

Toyota's March sales gained 10.5 percent to 120,987, which the No. 1 Japan
automaker attributed to strong light truck sales. Toyota division sales
were up 6.9 percent, while sales from the Lexus luxury unit rose 42.8 percent.

Honda sales were 0.5 percent higher at 87,132 units, a new monthly record, with a
55 percent increase in truck sales offsetting a 7.4 percent
decline in cars. Earlier, Germany's Volkswagen AG reported record March sales of
26,488, up 52.1 percent. All percentages are based on a selling
rate of 27 days in March compared with 26 in the year-ago period.
