I have the rear end whine too, at about 35-40 mph. Doesn't concern me =
too much. My 81 Jimmy with posi did that too. What does piss me off is=
=
the detonation (pinging) I'm getting. I use 87 octane (as recommended)=
=
and below 2000 rpm at medium loads (like cruising up a hill), I can =
hear it. I filled up with 89 and it hasn't been doing it. I'm afraid =
if I take it in to get "fixed", which I'm guessing is retarding the =
timimg a couple of degrees, I'll lose power. But with 89 at 56.9 cents=
=
per liter (2.15 per gallon) its expensive! I don't know what to do. =
Out of curiosity, if they can make diesel pistons survive detonation, =
which is how they operate, for hundred of thousands of miles, why =
can't they make gas pistons do the same? =
=

Chad:
I run my 97 SLT V8 on 89 octane without pinging until I pull my trailer.
Then I run 92 octane...problem solved.
