My two cents on auto vs. manual is this:

   An automatic transmission may not tow any less or any more than a
manual, but a manual can certainly start a larger load moving. Many
factors there though swell such as traction, etc... In a load moving
contest though, the manual will almost always win. Hence why people say
it is better for towing. That is just my experience having towed over
14000 pounds on occasion with my bosses Cummins Dually with a 5 speed.
