You should not go over a 275. Depending on the brand the 275s are almost 10 in wide. Any thing over will give you unpredictable handling at the limit. Don't ask how I know.....

The problem is that the only available size is a 275/40-17. It's way shorter than a 255/55-17 (about 2 inches). I have 275/40-17s on 9" wheels on my other ride and so I compared them side by side one day. It would look funny not to mention the 7% increase on your speed and odometer.

I've given it much thought and there really isn't any other alternative. Maybe 18" wheels from a late model viper?
