Sounds to me like your + terminal was corroded, because you weren't able
to jump it off. When you changed the battery it cleaned the terminal,
not to mention that the alternator can't charge the battery if it isn't
making good contact. It happens all the time.
Did you have the battery load tested for a bad cell?
