The 9 1/4" has 12 bolts on the diff cover, while the smaller rear has 10 ( I
could be wrong, I've never owned one). Just look at any (just about) 1/2
ton Dodge truck from early '70's and up and they will have the 9 1/4" in it.
(just a little wider than the Dakota version).
