finishing the air dam

I have a black SLT and want to paint the front air dam body color
(currently grey and U-gly). I don't know whether to paint it (have it
painted) or to buy a new black one from the dealer. Any suggestions?
What would be involved in painting something like that and making it
look good? Could I do it myself?
