The HP (and mileage) gains aren't as noticeable as, lets say, a modified
throttle body...but you need to look at the whole picture and not just one
part of it. The power gains were insignificant when I first had my exhaust
system put in, but the mileage DID go up slightly. Now, add a modified TB,
MSD, Chip, electric fan conversion, 180 t'stat, etc...and it all starts
working even better.

Nothing against your buddies knowledge (30 years is a long time)...and yes
the computer does (somewhat) control the output (fuel and timing), but it's
not the deciding factor.

If you change the exhaust system, it starts to run slightly leaner and the
computer changes its output. You change the TB and the computer changes its
output. You install headers, and the computer changes its output again.

The computer relies on all of the other sensors for its decisions, but it
does NOT control them.

Subject: DML: Exhaust Systems! Are They Worth IT?

Question? I went to a buddy of mine who does exhaust(30 years plus
experience) and he stated "putting an exhaust system on my 97 Dakota
would be a waste of money". Why you might ask? As I did too. His
reason was that the computer controls all of the fuel and other
associated devices which controls your mpg and horsepower output. He
said that no improvement would be able to be seen or noticed. I
questioned him and pointed to many articles which stated different, but
he stuck by his guns and I feel his experience carries a lot of weight.
AHH SO confused now. The reason that I wanted to put an exhaust system
on the truck was for better gas mileage. I'm just looking for some
input from everyone on this subject.
Thanks
SAL
