According to Larry Shepard at MP, the following hot rod mods would get
the 318 into the 250 hp range:
* swap on an aluminum dual plane intake P4529116
* swap on a small vacuum secondary 4bbl carb
* swap in a mild hydraulic slider cam P4452767
* swap in better valve springs P4286813
* install the electronic ignition kit P3690426
* air cleaner base for 4bbl carb. is P4529001-2
* headers, dual exhaust with existing 'log' exhaust manifolds
of use the Magnum cast iron exhaust manifolds (as good as the 340)
You would have to cost out all the needed parts to see if it's feasible
compared to the $ figure that you mentioned.
If you're looking to compete against 300-350hp 360s:
* first, measure the engine's actual compression ratio ... should be in
9.1 range
If engine is being rebuilt, install 9.1 pistons P4529419 ... if
block ok
consider milling the head .060" along the manifold face
* use the W1 360s heads (1.88" valve is better for the 318 than those
from 340)
* bigger cam P4452761 and HD valve springs P4120249
* use dual plane intake P4529116 and a 650 cfm vacuum-secondary carb
* use Magnum exhaust manifolds and a copy of the R/T exhaust system
* use viscous fan P4120758, 6-blade water pump P5249558, billet pulleys
* use ported heads P4876179 and step up the 280 or 284 cam
* have a gear that's one step up from the 360s (esp. if ported heads are
used)
