Bernd,

I had this problem a few months ago, turned out to be the pitman arm. It
was actually not all that badly worn. I had my roommate turn the wheel back
and forth while I laid under the front end (make sure your wife isn't mad at
you before doing this ;) and watched the pitman arm bounce all over.
