Kyle - Cast ductile iron is a good all-around engineering material. However,
it is not as ductile as forged steel. Ductile iron cannot be welded by
common "garage" means, also. Carbon Steel is a more versatile alloy in terms
of formability, weldability, and ductility, but it is easier to make complex
castings out of ductile iron.
  I realize that this info may not help very much, but if you ever foresee
the need to weld anything on the jack, get the steel.
