I found what works best for me is to bring the front seat with its back in
a nearly upright position as close to the steering wheel as possible. I
know when I'm in position when my knees are just touching the bottom of the
dash. I grasp the metal part of the shifter (not the knob end) about half
way with my palm facing me and fingers bent over the top of the shifter so
that my fingernails are pointing downward.
Right after I've launched, I take my eyes off the staging tree and watch the
tach. If I were to do a 1-2 shift at, say, 4500 rpm, I would watch the tach
until it hits about 4300 rpm, then shift my eyes to the gear shift indicator
and do a VERY short upward jerk with my arm (the 1-2 throw is very short
on the auto. and it's very easy to move too much and wind up in DRIVE).
When the shift is successful, I switch my eyes back to the tach and ready
myself for the 2-3 (DRIVE) shift following the same procedure. The 2-3
shift is a little longer movement than the 1-2 shift so that it lessens the
possibility of going into NEUTRAL. If you happen to get into NEUTRAL, lift
the gas pedal immediately (not worth damaging anything ... there will always
be other runs) and when the tach settles back down, put it into DRIVE and
get back on the gas pedal.
Unfortunately, this Saturday is the one Saturday that I've got a previous
scheduled event to go to. Hopefully, I (and some other Ont. DMLers) can make
it to Milan next spring and meet up with the Mich. DMLers.
Just try to stay relaxed, ignore everything and everyone else, and enjoy
the moment. Wishing I could be there.
