Thanks! Between yours and Jon's posts (re-printed below) I've got a better
understanding of what's going on and why the headers helped eliminate my ping
probs.

Well, what happens is your exhaust is scavenged more efficiently. Because
the exhaust is exits more efficiently, it stays in the CC less time and thus
your CC temps go down. Lowering CC temp is a great way to stop engine
knock. Because the exhaust flows better, the intake gains too. This is an
added benefit as your intake charge isnt fighting your exhaust charge as
much. Hope this helps.

Some have theorized that the better heat transfer properties of headers help to keep the engine cooler, thus reducing hot spots and preignition. I don't know if that was the reason, or if the headers changed some other property of your engine, but unless I hear somethin' better, it works for me... :-)
