The best way to get those JBLs to work to their fullest potential is to add
an
external amplifier. The wattage that your head unit (cd/tape/radio) is
putting out
may be rated at say 20x4....in reality it is probably only about 3.5watts,
the 20
watts is a peak level with allot of distortion. Distortion is what kills
speakers, with
the power from the head unit you have to crank it up to get anything out of
your
speakers, when you turn the knob you also add more distortion. When you buy
a
good quality amp, maybe one that just puts out 25-35 watts per channel or
so, you
will get great sound improvement over what you currently have. When you buy
an
amp stay away from the cheap ones like Pyramid,Profile, etc.. Stay with the
bigger
names like Sony, MTX, Rockford, Soundstream, something with less than 0.08%
total harmonic distortion. Some speakers will sound louder than others
because of
their SPL or Sensitivity level, this is the sound measured from 1 meter away
from
the speaker when 1 watt of power is applied to it. A speaker with a
sensitivity level
of 93db will be louder than a speaker with 89db. This does is not an
indication of
what speaker will sound better. Hope this helps a little....
