Frank - Hang in there with your tranny troubles. As far as the Cherokee is
concerned, you're right on the money. My wife & I flew to Kansas for a
wedding and rented a Cherokee (we were supposed to have been given an
Intrepid), and except for the torque monster 4.0L I-6 motor, we hated it!
Talk about your freeway noise! On the plus side, we hit a huge rainstorm
while we were down there and washed out several backroads. First time I've
ever used or driven something with 4WD. (Thank God we didn't have the
Intrepid!) But overall we were not impressed. Just my $0.02.

Well, i brought my Dak in to the dealer AGAIN to get them to fix the padding
on the back seat which is basically hanging off of one side. And also to
run some diagnostics on my so-called "new" tranny that has been grinding
into Drive and Reverse.
Really crappy part is that it takes at least 2 days cause they have to call
company engineering because it's so new that they have no work books on the
new engine/tranny combination and DC doesn't want the dealer mechanics to go
screwing around and make things worse.
So anyway, the service manager calls engineering, then waits 'til they call
back, usually the next day. But at least the service manager is gonna make
sure to use the same mechanic that replaced the first tranny, so he should
be pretty familiar with it.

Now onto the experience i had with the Cherokee Sport that i had for the day
until they gave me a Cirrus.
When I was truck shopping i was actually considering between the Dak and a
Cherokee. I've REALLY liked the Daks since they came out with the new
design in '97, but always gave the Cherokee a lot of respect for it's
off-road capabilities and passenger room. Which by the way is just not that
much better than the CC.
I am soooo glad i chose my Dak (aside from the current mechanical
dificulties). I had the Cherokee for about 4-5 hrs today and i really hated
it. The craftmanship seemed really cheap, the windows whistled and howled
at freeway speed. And the whole dash was just cheap looking. And the doors
are way thin. And my Dak rides a lot higher. When i was driving, it felt
like i was in a little tank. The handling seemed way better in the Dak
cause i took a lot of the same turns and felt i HAD to take them slower in
the Cherokee. And my Dak is 4x4 with the big 31's on it.
In the end I was very surprised how poorly the Cherokee stacked up against
my Dak. Although it did have one advantage--it's tranny seemed to be
working fine. :)
