Todd,
1. For a jack I would recommend a good hydraulic jack. Bumper jacks are unstable and don't do
good things to bumpers. Also carry some wood to put under the jack to give it a firm base.
2. In Saudi we carried things in our 4wd Suburbans called "Sand Ladders." They looked like a
ladder only they were welded up from angle-iron (about an inch/inch and a quarter on a side).
They were about 3 1/2 to 4 ft. long, about 12 to 14 inches wide, and the spacing of the cross
pieces that made up the "ladder" was about 8 inches apart. Two of these (one placed just in front
or behind each rear wheel--you may have to do a little digging to get them there) will get you out
of a lot of bad places.
3. Don't forget the shovel!
