The way I understand it is this:
The "thing" that directs the air to specific vents (main vents,
defrost vents, floor vents...) is operated by vacuum. Ever get in
your truck and jack with the ac controls without starting the engine?
Ever hear it make that "whoosh" sound? Vacuum.
