Hey all,
I have a question concerning posi diff's,a nd 4wd Daks. I have a 96 4x4,
and it has the one-tire-fryer rear. The front is also as handicapped. I
have wanted to install a posi in the rear for ages now. I have heard tho,
that if I put a posi in the rear, and not one up front also, that when i
shift into 4, I'll tear out the front axle, and other components will break.
I think this is BULLSCHIZNIT, but I don't want to find out the hard way.
How could a no-posi front counteract a posi rear to the point of major
breakage? A posi only transfers power, via clutches, to the axles. It
doesn't amplify it, last I checked. I want the posi for extra grip in
winter, and summer street drags. My Dak needs all the traction help it can
get. A new posi is about 300$, not to mention the extra parts needed for
the install. that could work out to be over 800$ for front and rear. I
think that info I heard is whacko, but I need other advice, so I turn to the
pro's of the 'List. If you have any info, mail me offlist. Thanks!!!
BTW, I also put new fluid in the f/r axles this weekend. The red gasket
material is a PIA to get off, so use a knife *or a gasket scraper* to get
the worst of it off; and some xylene or acetone cleaner with steel wool to
clean up the surface. I found that works well. I put in Valvoline
semi-synthetic 80W-90 gear oil. How has eveyone liked that in non-posi's?
