You are correct that *in the situations you describe*, those lights are
"abnormal" conditions. But on dirt or in the snow, 4WD is not
"abnormal" (quite the opposite). When you're parked on a hill and have
started the engine, the e-brake being engaged is not "abnormal." I do
sometimes turn on the cruise when I get on the road, even if I won't be
using it right away. Having that on doesn't "hurt" anything.

A hi-temp light *is* an abnormal condition anytime. However, just
because there are problem lights in that area doesn't mean that ALL the
lights indicate problems. If you check out the '01 dashboard, this area
is labeled as "Information Center" or something to that effect - NOT
"Problem Notification"

If a transmission burns up from use in 3rd gear rather than OD at
_non-highway_ speeds, there's something wrong with it or how it was
maintained. Remember, these transmissions with OD aren't far removed
from their previous versions that didn't have OD. In fact, jumping in
and out of OD frequently (as you will likely do on hilly roads or in
city-type driving) will cause the transmission to get hotter and
potentially wear & fail sooner.
