how to prevent head crack

I expect that an engine that pings is more likely to crack a head. A cooler
thermostat might help and I hear that headers or any exhaust improvement that
reduces back pressure may help also. Cooler plugs? Other opinions requested. We
need top know everything that can help make our engines last longer!
