150 bucks is a fairly good price for a reputable shop to put it in.
If you have all the equipment and knowledge I'd do it yourself. I installed
the remote starter on my buddy's 97 acura integra. It took a while to
figure out, but 5-6 hours later, it all started. (we eventually had to pay
a good friend 20 bucks to hook up the door lock actuators (integra had no
power locks) but that was about it)
If you want to tackle it. I'd really recommend
1) a wiring diagram of the ignition switch, and what wire means what.
2) basic electrical tape, butt connectors, t-splice connectors, crimps,
strippers (for the wires and entertainment too if you're into that sorta
thing)
3) I'd get a drill also, because you're gonna have to run wires thru the
fire wall, but if it's an explorer, I'm sure you can cut the boot on the
brake booster on the driver's side and go thru there.
4) find out where the TACH wire is. I hooked up the wrong wire for the tach
wire and it didn't start.
5) locate all the door pin switches
6) Test light AND a volt meter!
Have fun. if you run into probs or something, just sit down and read the
manual. (can e-mail us too and we might be able to help) What I did was go
through the manual before the install and wrote what I needed and didn't.
Most automatic starter units have so many functions a lot of wires won't be
needed.
