I encountered a similar problem in my 93 Dak 4WD this fall.
Ok, try this and I would almost bet, almost that it will work: You should
have the NP231 tcase, if so, it calls for 7176 ATF+3 fluid to be used. It
also states that if 7176 ATF+3 is not available Dexron Mercon III is
acceptable. I used the Mobil 1 ATF once(used Amsoil all the other times),
and couldnt get my truck to engage at all. Well Mobil 1 synthetic ATF sucks,
and is not 7176 ATF+3 approved. I went out and bought like 4 quarts of 7176
ATF+3 fluid, even though the tcase only holds like 2-3 pints. I removed the
drain and fill plugs and continuosly kept pouring the 'good' 7176 ATF+3 into
the tcase and was letting it flow out; this kind of flushed the bad stuff
out. Completely let the tcase drain out for 10 minutes or so. I bought
normal 7176 ATF+3 from WalMart to flush the tcase out and filled it back up
with Amsoil ATF, which is 7176 ATF+3 approved. It now works awesome and
engages easily.
You will need a 30MM wrench for the drain and fill plugs. Hope this helps.
Let us know if it works.
