DSL was :Re: Home computer/Dak update

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It uses the existing copper wires
in your house. With a normal 56K modem, all the data moves continually
through the one phone line you have. With DSL, the line is split in two.
One for data and one for voice. So you can talk on the phone and be online
at the same time. I have never used cable so I can't compare it to DSL. As
for comparing it to a 56K modem, it is like night and day. It is very fast.
My max download speed with DSL is around 1.5Mb/sec.That is mega bits, not
megabytes. That comes out to 1500K. Much faster than 56K. The speed you
get is directly related to how close you are to the phone company's central
office. You have to be within 3 miles. I am within 9,000 feet so I get a
pretty fast connection. The only downside I have seen to cable is that
although it provides serious bandwidth, it can also degrade as more and more
people hook up to the cable. DSL essentially gives you your own direct
connection to the internet. Hope this helps. If you have any other
questions please ask or go to www.dslreports.com for more info.
