I just changed from 3.55 to 3.90. I ended up yanking them out. I pull a
23" trailer and have to run at highway speeds with the overdrive off. The
RPM's with 27" tires was around 3400. Made a considerable difference in gas
mileage and noise level. With the OD on no problem. To be honest with you
I didn't notice that big of a difference in acceleration based on the
dollars you end up spending. Just my opinion.

worse gas mileage ain't that bad...cost is about $550 from a reputable diff.
shop. about 50/50 between labor and parts.

Advantage - better acceleration
Disadvantage - worse gas mileage
