RE: transfer case

Jason; This IS a puzzle. The technician doesn't know what he's talking about
OR he does know but isn't describing it well.
The automatic transmission uses bands to "brake" or hold stationary the
outer ring on the planetary gear sets. This determines whether the planetary
gears are lowering the ratio or driving "straight through". The bands are
adjustable and replaceable. Band replacement requires transmission removal
and disassembly.
The transfer case (on the '99s at least) doesn't have bands. The NV 231,
part time case and the NV 242, full time case, both use sliding shift forks
to determine both range (high or low) and mode (2x or 4x). If the technician
meant chain, he certainly wasn't very clear about it. The chain is
replaceable (requires removing and disassembling the case) and in 2x mode
the chain isn't moving, it's stationary.
Hope this helps, also, I'll defer to anyone with more intimate knowledge of
the guts of these contraptions. ;-)
Neil
