upgrade advice sought

I need some advice on some planned modifications/upgrades to my 93
5.2L. The only mod it currently has is the Edelbrock 14" open
element air filter holder with a 3" K&N filter in it.

My belly pan gasket leaks, and the "fix" procedure appears to
require removing the entire intake manifold. I've just about
decided that if I have to get that deep into the engine anyway, I
should go ahead and "upgrade" to the M1 2bbl intake manifold. I'm
wondering if I should replace my trottle body with the 52mm one.

Also planned at this time is replacing the plugs with autolite
3923's, as I'm sure the plugs I have in there have been affected
adversely by the oil burning. And since I'll be replacing the
plugs, I should do the cap, rotor, and wires. However, I'm worried
about putting new wires on with all the heat my exhaust manifold
puts out. The plastic wire loom protectors on my stock wires have
all but melted off on the drivers side, and I can't believe that
that amount of heat is good for the wires themselves. Any suggestions
on which wires to get, and how to protect them from the heat?

And while I'm doing all this work, I'll be putting in a 180 t-stat,
and replacing the alternator which is not working quite right.

Are there other parts I should upgrade/service/replace while all
this is being done? I'll be acquiring the parts a bit at a time
as I have spare change for it. The engine has just under 100,000
miles on it now. :( I'm hoping once this oil leak is gone, I'll
be able to switch to a lightweight synthetic oil.

Thanks for any help,
jim
