Based on a 1986 Nissan my friend had...when he put a
shell on and an open boot, you could definitely hear
the rear end. Without the shell, you couldn't. One of
two possibilities....either the shell acted as an echo
chamber and exaggerated the noise or the shell blocked
out the wind noise and brought the rear end to the
forefront...or a combination of the two.

As far as Dakota's go....the dealer will do anything
to lay blame for the rear end noise on anything but
the rear end.
