Yes, it can ruin the engine. It all depends on how long it was driven.

The driver should have noticed a big power loss due to the crank trying to
spin in oil instead of air. As the crank spun, it would mix air into the
oil, essentially turning the oil into foam. The oil / air foam has a much
lower viscosity than the oil, which can lead to rapid bearing failure.

DO NOT overfill your engine.
