Getting the codes from the computer.. engine light?

Some mechanic just told me that I needed to have the engine light on in my
truck before I could hook it up to a scanner to get any kind of codes. It
wouldn't work, otherwise. Was she full of #$@$! or does she have something,
there? I don't have a scanner, so I had to look somewhere.
