You don't need to have an MIL lit, heck you don't even need a scanner! Just
use the key on/off method to retrieve codes through the MIL on the dash. You
can then check your codes on the DML codes page and see what you've got
going on. HTH,

Subject: DML: Getting the codes from the computer.. engine light?
Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 08:47:34 -0800
Some mechanic just told me that I needed to have the engine light on in my
truck before I could hook it up to a scanner to get any kind of codes. It
wouldn't work, otherwise. Was she full of #$@$! or does she have something,
there? I don't have a scanner, so I had to look somewhere.
Thanks,
Richard
