NDR - Stereo Question

This related to the Car Stereo in my brother in law's S10 (which was my S10
before I got my 2000 Dak). He's been through a couple of radios on warranty
replacement now, and each time the problem seems to be the same. The radio
works for a while and then one day it just turns on, the display lights up,
and then it kicks off in a few seconds. No sound is produced. The radio is
a cheap KOSS, which I know is not good - but each time they replace the
radio they seem to give him a better model. We are on radio number 4 now.
I should also mention that the Jensen CD player that was in the truck when I
gave it to him also crapped out with a similar problem - it would turn on
but give no sound. I had that radio looked at and was told one of the IC's
was damaged. My question is - any idea what would cause this? I'm a EE and
it seems to me that either something is causing a short over time, or maybe
there is a problem with the power source, which in this case is the factory
wire harness. But since I don't know much about auto electrical systems and
I don't live in Ohio (so I can't go toy with it), I was hoping someone here
might have an idea if they play with car stereos more than I do.
Thanks.
