Dave,
    If it's quiet until you push the peddle in a little, I'll bet the
throwout bearing is shot. It will squeel like a banshee when it goes out.
Crank it up in neutral and just touch the peddle with a little pressure and
if it squeels then you can bet it's the bearing. Have to pull the tranny just
to replace a bearing is lot of labor for a little cost of parts.
