I think sometimes they just have crappy castings instead of mystery
sizes. 9.8mm isn't the head size, it has something to do with the bolt
shank itself. I can't remember exactly what right now. Standard bolts are
3/8-16, 1/2-20. etc. Metric have 3 thread pitches I know of, 1.0, 1.25, 1.50
and then the marking on the head is another rating. BUT metric is
supposed(!) to be so much easier because there aren't any fractions of a mm,
everything is a solid # size. (yeah, right) 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,etc. Just ask the
guy working on it how easy it is, huh? I always said if the people that
designed these things actually had to work on them after the fact there
would be a lot of changes made.
