Your description of the problem is generally fits into either gears,
pinion, or carrier or axle bearings are starting to fail which, in turn,
causes an incorrect gear alignment.

Some specific causes and effects can be found at:

I personally don't think that you'll experience a sudden, outright
failure since you have just noticed it. You might want to try and
get a "professional" opinion down there in Carlisle, either at a
private garage or at a dealer's service dept. or maybe from some
MMLer that's there and who is knowledgeable (could ask around
at their tent).

Sorry to hear the problem has cropped up. Good luck.

Bob
