It was my thinking that maybe The Mud (and yes - I will forever be
referring to The Mud and The Pit with capitol letters - they are both
live, impish creatures)... anyway - its my thinking that the mud may
have contaminated the bearing surfaces of the pulleys - overheated them
- and caused rapid failure.
