I would agree with Rich on this one but I want to add one other thing.
It may be the starter has a dead spot. I know on my fathers '48 Ford the
starter has a dead spot and sometimes does that just not as bad. If you
tap it lightly with a hammer it will move the starter just enough to
catch a good connection and will then turn the car over. Just a thought.
Still sounds like the solenoid though.

You can bypass (short) the solenoid to spin the starter. This will tell
you
which one is the problem. My guess would be the solenoid. If it were
the
starter, it most likely wouldn't spin at all. I would also make sure
the
cables to the battery are making good contact.
