Here is a new wiring diagram that allows for On, Off or automatic
operation.

As for just connecting a switch to the ground, that would leave the
circuit hot and could short to ground if you went into deep water. You
could put a SPDT switch right after the fuse and the circuit breaker to
cut off all power to the circuit.
