That hasn't been my experience - I recently changed the fluid
in both diffs on my Ram. It wasn't leaking before, and there wasn't
a gasket in either diff - just RTV. I scraped off the old RTV,
cleaned it off the cover with a wire wheel but just used a scraper
on the diff itself; I didn't even do a super job of it. ;-) I
didn't use anything special like the Right Stuff or anything, just
a tube of red RTV I had laying around. No leaks yet!
