Issue With 2000 CC 4.7 4X4

Hello everyone. I don't contribute much these days as I am in digest mode.
So basically when I see something I can respond to it's already been
responded to by 45 people. But I've been having an issue with my Dak lately
and I'd like to run it by the gang.

A couple times now I've been driving down the road, usually accellerating
from a stop, not far from home so it seems I'm in the transition of the
truck warming up, and I would get a cough and quick stall from the engine.
The check engine light would come on and then the truck would run fine for
days. Last Friday it happened again, only this time the engine would not go
above 2400 RPM after the cough. I could drive gently, shifting early and it
seemed like nothing was wrong. The second I tried to give it more than about
1/4 throttle, or it hit 2400 rpm then the engine would just bog. I pulled
over and looked things over. It idled well, but eratically. I tried driving
off and the same thing was happening. So I decided to shut it off and see if
that helped. Sure enough, turning off the key and re-starting the truck
after a few seconds seemed to clear it up. The check engine light always
seems to go off after 3 trips in the truck. Meaning a day or two later the
light goes off when I get in to go somewhere. Anyone have any ideas here?

A few years ago when I first joined the DML it was posted that you could
pull codes from the Gen-3's by holding down the trip odometer reset button
while turning on the ignition. This does send my truck through a self test
sequence but has never flashed any codes for me. Is there another way to get
codes from this thing without a scanner?

I'm probably going to take it in the shop later this week, but I wanted to
see what you folks thought it could be. And I'm still not sure where I will
take it. Theres an independent garage here in Phoenix that I find very
trustworthy and I've had them do some work on my wife's 94 Voyager and I'm
thinking about giving them a try. As for the Dealer, with this truck I had
it in for waranty service for 3 separate issues. Of those 3 issues I
actually had to have it in 6 times and even had to explain to the Service
Advisor and the Tech what the heck the problem was twice. I would always get
a NTF on the first visit. So at this point I am thinking I don't want to
give them any gravy....

Anyway, sorry this is so long. Any help would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Tim
