Wow, you should be a dealer mechanic!! :)
I've changed my thermostat quite a few times (yes me...mr. no fine motor
skills), and never had to touch the alternator. I simply loosened the water
neck bolts with a socket (with an extension) lifted the bolts with my
magnetic grabber, and lifted the water neck (giving it a little twist) and
it came right out. Then you can remove the t-stat and gasket, clean the
gasket area and reinstall the new gasket and t-stat.
If you were smart the first time, a bench grinder does a nice job of
eliminating the tab problem.
